In the fall of 2021, TBC was honored to have Brian Bennett selected as the trial technician for The United States v. Elizabeth Holmes Fraud Trial. The four-month trial ran from September through December and while it was a long time to be away from home, it was a wonderful opportunity for our small family business to showcase our unique skillset in a high-profile trial.
The media attention was surreal. Tickets were handed-out on a first-come, first-serve basis, by the Sherriff’s Deputy. Reporters were sleeping outside the courthouse, in order to be the first in line for a “golden ticket.” That ticket allowed entry into the courtroom. Once all the tickets were handed out, reporters were allowed entry in the overflow courtroom, where a Zoom Stream of the proceedings could be viewed. Amongst the former cabinet members on the witness list, was Defense Secretary, General Mattis, who Brian had the privilege of presenting exhibits during his duration on the witness stand.
The courtroom was equipped with an A/V system, and several monitors throughout, so no additional equipment was needed. However, we were reminded why our trial technicians always have backup equipment available. The court’s A/V system was down on one of the trial days and the courthouse technicians needed at least one day to diagnose the issue. Luckily, there was a backup projector that could be used. Brian setup the projector with an HDMI switch, that allowed the Prosecution and Defense to toggle their presentations. Although this was not an ideal setup, it enabled the trial to proceed until the A/V system could be repaired. Everyone involved in the case, as well as the court staff, were appreciative.
The fact that trial was in session while many of the courts were still enforcing COVID lockdowns throughout the United States, was in itself an accomplishment. With the amount of people in the courtroom it was surprising that there were not multiple delays or even continuation. By a stroke of luck, the four-month trial was completed without losing a single day due to illness!
In the end, it was an interesting and exciting experience. Becoming acquainted with Elizabeth and her family was wonderful. They were effusive with praise for Brian’s trial work. Elizabeth’s portrayal in movies and on television is in stark contrast to the Elizabeth whom Brian got to know briefly. The attorneys at Williams and Connolly are among the best in the business and it is always a pleasure working with them. We look forward to working with them on future trials and feel confident in the relationship and trust that has been built between TBC and the Williams and Connolly attorneys.
For a small family business in Lee’s Summit, this experience was an unbelievable experience that we will cherish forever!
